FRAUD: Don't be a Victim

Credit fraud and credit card theft is a widespread problem affecting the entire consumer credit industry. The most common occurrence of credit card theft happens when wallets, purses and briefcases are lost or stolen.

Credit card account statements also contain sensitive information that you don't want thieves to know. Even store and ATM receipts will frequently print your account card number. It's a good idea to shred all financial documents before discarding them and look over your credit report for unexplained credit inquiries or credit approvals.

Another common practice for credit card identity theft is the simple act of mail theft. When a criminal intercepts a pre approved credit card application from an unsuspecting consumer's mailbox, he can call the issuer of the credit card offer and request the mailing address be changed. Many credit card issuers will make a change of address without requiring any further verification, and subsequently the new credit card will be mailed directly to the criminal.

Credit obtained fraudulently will go undetected until the charges become past due and the creditor comes looking for you.

Make Note of Our New Hold Policies

CHECK HOLDS
Effective immediately, Jet Credit Union reserves the right to enforce a 'hold' on checks of $250 or more on Visa payments, loans (secured and unsecured) and Home Equity Lines of Credit.

ATM HOLDS
Holds are also placed on ATM deposits. Please treat cash withdraws like a personal check and document each withdraw in order to maintain accurate account balance records. All ATM deposits will have a five (5) business day availability hold regardless of cash or check. Suspicious activity may trigger holds.

DEBIT CARDS
When using your debit card remember to record the transaction in your register immediately. Debit purchases place a hold for the amount for three (3) business days. This insures that the funds will be available when the merchant presents their receipts through Visa for payment.

"RATES," "TECHNOLOGY,"
"FINANCIAL COUNSELING," "IDENTITY THEFT," "FRAUD," "SMALL BUSINESS ECONOMY," "HISPANIC COMMUNITY," "TERRORIST ACTIVITY," "RETIREMENT FUNDS"

A Letter from the Chief Operations Officer, Beverly G. Jinkins

The above words and phrases are among the most common headlines we have seen the past year. With these catch words in mind, Jet Credit Union is offering you the following information to help you make informed financial decisions.

As you know, investment rates have not been as low as they are now in over 40 years. Jet Credit Union has tried to maintain investments rates that match or beat the local competition. (See our most current rates on page two.)

With the crash of so many dot com's, technology businesses and well established companies such as World Com, Enron and Martha Stewart, the best advise Jet can offer is: make sure your retirement funds and Savings are in low-risk, insured accounts.

Jet has partnered with Financa Mortgage to provide mortgage loans and products to our members. Again, rates have not been this low since the 1950's - early 60's. To take advantage of the low rates call Sherry at to apply.

Indianapolis has one of the fastest growing Hispanic communities in the country. In an effort to serve our new neighbors, Jet is programming the ATM's that we own to include Spanish language features, which are now being tested and should be available soon.

With the merger of so many banks in our area, we have helped several small businesses with their financial needs. If you know of a business that is tired of the hassles that come with bank mergers, then ask them to call Shane at .

Jet Credit Union will begin offering financial classes in the second quarter. Some of the topics we'll cover include how to balance your checkbook, how to prepare for buying a home, and how to lower your debt balance and increase your Savings balance. In the meantime, it is important to be proactive with your finances. Start a family budget for the New Year.

Fraud in America has reached a record setting high. In 2002, check fraud surpassed credit card fraud at an alarming rate. Due to this increase, Jet is now required to implement fraud prevention techniques, this includes Thumb Printing. Effective in February, new members opening an account and nonmembers who wish to cash checks will be required to provide a thumb print.

In addition to fraud prevention techniques, Jet will be offering members the opportunity to receive a copy of their Credit Report to review. Because identity theft has become such a major problem nationwide, reviewing your credit report is an excellent way to make sure your personal records match the credit bureaus'.

To Protect Yourself From Identity Theft:

  • Safeguard your social security number
  • Request password protection for your accounts
  • Check your credit reports for suspicious activity
  • Stop junk mail by "opting-out" of receiving pre approved offers
If You Become Aware of Identity Theft:
  • Initiate fraud alerts to the credit agencies
  • Spread the word to any creditors where bills have been run up
  • Get a police report
As our world, society and community continue to change, please do not be offended when asked to produce an Identification Card even if you have been a long time Jet Credit Union member. We do this to protect your accounts and we will continue to take steps to screen members and their transactions.

The employees and staff would like to wish all of our members and families a very prosperous New Year and we look forward to serving each of you in 2003!
